EFFECT O N CONT THEATER Essay Example For Students

Impact O N CONT THEATER Essay William Shakespeares Effect on Contemporary Theater William Shakespeare and the entirety of his works incredibly added to contemporary venue from multiple points of view. His comprehension of others permitted him to completely get a handle on the quality he composed of. Crafted by Shakespeare contain a solid and consistent truth, contacting enthusiastic and otherworldly parts of life. These real factors make Shakespeares works imperative, even on toadys learning organizations and showy domains, representing his tremendous achievement. Shakespeare was conceived in the Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire on April 23rd, 1564. In spite of the fact that his family fell into difficult situations monetarily, youthful Williams instruction was not disregarded. He went to neighborhood schools in Stratford. Shakespeare saw yearly plays and voyaging craftsmen at a youthful age. It is conceivable that these plays and exhibitions touched off a sparkle that kept on consuming. Throughout the winter of 1582, at 18 years old, he wedded Anne Hathaway who was 26 and right now a half year pregnant by him. After two years Anne brought forth twins, a kid and a young lady. With a spouse and three kids to keep up, things were getting somewhat troublesome. Shakespeare moved to London in 1585, where he was fruitful. In London Shakespeare filled in as an entertainer and an author and even possessed his own playhouse. He was a regarded man there. He was the main writer to have his proper life story composed and distributed with his works. Somewhere in the range of 1592 and 1594, all performance centers were shut because of an episode of the plague. During this time Shakespeare went to verse, composing works and long account sonnets, including Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucrece. At the point when the auditoriums revived in 1594, Shakespeare joined the recently framed Lord Chamberlains Men, under the support of Queen Elizabeth. Being a significant piece of the troupe, he in the end turned into a regarded senior part. Composing plays before long turned into a requesting business. Shakespeare composed thirty-seven plays, which were isolated into three fundamental classes, parody, disaster, and history. Shakespeare resigned t Stratford and got one of its driving residents. In April of 1616, William Shakespeare at fifty-two years old was let go. Without William Shakespeare and his numerous incredible works, contemporary auditorium would not be in any way similar to it is today. His stanza, particularly the intensity of his similitudes and his characters, so balanced and deliberately point by point that they regularly appear living individuals. He was likewise an ace of plot development, outstandingly verbose plot structure, which remains nearby climatic structure as one of the two principle frames that have been transcendent since the commencement of western theater. With Shakespears tremendous impact on various societies, he attempted and tried varieties of sentence structure and word utilization. He tested so the stodgy English language would not be so normal and exhausting. Shakespeare was to be an author forever, to be exceptionally acclaimed. He merits acclaim by all writers, over a wide span of time. His works are immortal and shift as per the enthusiasm of the peruser, making him general. In Shakespears own day and ti me, nobody at any point envisioned what a tremendous achievement his works would turn into. No essayist since William Shakespeare has ever been also known. No other author has evoked such a significant number of emendations, hypotheses, and critiques than Shakespeare. William Shakespeare was in fact an Elizabethan who exploited his time and abilities, thus changing todays time and gifts of contemporary theater.Bibliography:

Fairy Tales as Moral Lessons free essay sample

Stories as Moral Lessons When a great many people consider fantasies, they ordinarily envision an excellent princess that should be saved, a valiant sovereign that safeguards her and a joyfully ever in the wake of including a wedding between the ruler and princess. Individuals envision beasts and witches, yet here and there, when they read a fantasy they may see a basic good to the story that instructs us to carry out beneficial things instead of awful. I read The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen quite a while back and was astonished at how extraordinary it is from the Disney form we as a whole know. In the Disney form, likewise with all Disney films, there is an upbeat completion where the young lady gets the ruler. This isn't so in the first form by Hans Christian Andersen. His cheerfully ever is the point at which the little mermaid gets a spirit and gets the opportunity to go to paradise on account of her great deeds not wedding the sovereign and living joyfully ever after. We will compose a custom paper test on Fantasies as Moral Lessons or on the other hand any comparable point explicitly for you Don't WasteYour Time Recruit WRITER Just 13.90/page Hans Christian Andersen’s story recounts six mermaid princesses and focuses on the most youthful, much like the Disney adaptation, however that is almost the main thing that is the equivalent. She is not quite the same as her sisters; she is peaceful and mindful. Her nursery is not quite the same as her sisters in that it is formed like the sun and highlights a sculpture of an attractive kid, prognosticating her affection for the surface world and a human kid. She sees an attractive sovereign commending his birthday on a boat. Soon thereafter a tempest upsets the boat and she spares him from suffocating. She puts him on the shore close to a strict house where he will be found and dealt with. Later we are informed that she hears mariners discussing â€Å"so numerous beneficial things about the doings of the youthful ruler, that she was happy she had spared him. †(Andersen, standard. 16) She realizes where the prince’s palace is and goes through consistently watching him and falling all the more profoundly enamored with him. In the wake of got notification from her grandma that mermaids have no spirit and are basically transformed into ocean froth when they kick the bucket, except if they wed a human that adores them more than their folks, she decides that she should wed an uman with the goal that she may get a spirit. Since she is as of now enamored with the sovereign, she goes to the detestable sorceress who blends an elixir that will give her legs so she can go ashore and attempt to win the prince’s heart, yet the sorceress’ cost is the little mermaid’s voice. The sorceress removes the little mermaids tongue and gives her the mixture. The little mermaid goes to the shore, drinks the elixir and gets her legs, in any case, similar to the sorceress stated, it is unfathomably agonizing to stroll on her legs. She is found by the ruler after she has flushed the mixture and gotten legs, yet she can't talk subsequent to having her tongue cut out by the sorceress. Notwithstanding the way that she can't talk, she prevails upon the ruler with her magnificence and elegance, yet the sovereign accepts that a young lady at the strict house was the person who spared him and is enamored with her. The little mermaid figures she can in any case wed the sovereign on the grounds that the young lady he thinks saved him and is enamored with is in a strict house concentrating to be a cloister adherent. We see this case of instructing individuals to do great as opposed to detestable most plainly toward the end when the little mermaid passes on. She joins the â€Å"Daughters of the Air† and is informed that she has been given a spirit and may go to paradise following 300 years. In addition to the fact that she obtains a spirit and an opportunity to go to paradise, however she will have her 300 years decreased by one year each time she finds a decent youngster who carries bliss to their folks. On the opposite side, each time she cries a tear from seeing a kid accomplish something terrible, she will have one day added to her 300 years. Much the same as other fantasies, the young lady gets a compensation toward the end, however in The Little Mermaid, it is the prize of a spirit and paradise as a result of her great deeds that make the glad consummation, not wedding a ruler and living joyfully ever after. This story is unmistakably affecting individuals that their great deeds will be compensated, not that they will have a joyfully ever after, however they will win peoples’ hearts and go to paradise on the off chance that they do great. It additionally welcomes youngsters to be acceptable with the idea that they would enable a mermaid to get to paradise. Andersen initially finished the story with the mermaid dissolving, yet afterwards included the little girls of air coda, expressing that it was his unique expectation and, indeed, the working title of the story. The girls of the air say they can win spirits essentially by doing 300 years worth of good deeds, however Andersen later amended it to express that this relies on whether youngsters are fortunate or unfortunate. Great conduct takes a year off the ladies time of administration while awful conduct causes them to sob and a day is included for each tear they shed. This has gone under much analysis from researchers and analysts, expressing that, This last message is more startling than some other introduced in the story. The story plummets into the Victorian good stories composed for kids to terrify them into great conduct. P. L. Travers, creator of Mary Poppins and noted fables analyst, says, But a year taken off when a youngster carries on and a tear shed and a day included at whatever point a kid is shrewd? Andersen, this is shakedown. Also, the youngsters know it and state nothing. Theres generosity for you (Travers 1979). We see too in different pieces of the story instances of endorsed conduct being remunerated. At the point when the little mermaid, who is the most wonderful young lady on the planet, hears mariners continually praising the ruler she spared from suffocating, it makes her happy even more that she protected him and experienced passionate feelings for him. This is another case of good deeds being remunerated, on the grounds that the ruler wins the core of the little mermaid with his great deeds. There is the basic component of an insidiousness being in the story; the sorceress that gives the little mermaid an elixir that will give her legs so she can be with the ruler she adores. The sorceress removes her tongue in installment for the elixir, which is a grievous thing to happen particularly on the grounds that the little mermaid has the most wonderful voice of all. The little mermaid endures the loss of her tongue and the agony that goes with her mystically made legs with the most extreme elegance. She disregards the agony in her feet and legs, since it is better for her to endure peacefully and be with the sovereign she cherishes than to dispose of the reason for torment and be not able to be with her ruler. Here, once more, we see a case of ethicalness. In Disney’s adaptation of The Little Mermaid, it is totally extraordinary. They change the end with the goal that the little mermaid weds the sovereign. This rendition doesn't instruct individuals to do great, it just shows little youngsters that they should search for Prince Charming to deeply inspire them and remove them to a mansion to live cheerfully ever after. End After perusing The Little Mermaid and all the fantasies in our course book, Writing and Reading Across the Curriculum, and having grown up watching Disney motion pictures, it is my conviction that most fantasies were composed with the aim of putting forth for individuals the significance of being acceptable and righteous. We see this unmistakably in Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid where we are shown how extraordinary a prize you will get for acts of kindness and the punishment for terrible deeds. 5 Books to Help You Understand Higher Education

5 Books to Help You Understand Higher Education Ive been involved in higher education, as a student, a worker, or both, for 15 years. But even so, I frequently find the U.S. system of post-secondary education baffling. The enormous range of institutions  and the huge diversity of student experiences within them is part of the issue. As is the way that economic and social shifts cause dramatic, unpredictable change within the U.S. educational system. But despite its complexity, understanding higher education is absolutely crucial for making sense of many political, social, and economic trends in the country and around the world.  Higher ed is constantly in the news, whether its because of the latest free speech firestorm, a new tuition-free-college plan, a race-based-admissions lawsuit, or the terrifying fact that Americans owe more than $1.5 trillion in student loan debt. As we head into a new presidential primary (god help us), and as were always at some point in the endless applying-and-choosing-a-college cycle, it pays to get to the bottom of whats going on. And you really cant really understand trigger warnings, affirmative action, or student debt without first making sense of how race, gender, disability, and class shape higher education and the way students moveâ€"or dontâ€"through it. So whether youre considering college or grad school, parenting or mentoring someone who is, or just want a clearer understanding of one of the things politicians fight about, check out this short reading list of books about higher education. Start with these, and youll be on your way to understanding how intersections of race, class, gender, and disability shape both student experience and the larger political stakes of college in America. Sexism Ed: Essays on Gender and Labor in Academia  by Kelly J. Baker Kelly J. Baker has done it again. Bakers  Grace Period  was one of my favorite books of 2017, and with  Sexism Ed  she has written another crucial entry in the ongoing conversation about higher education in the twenty-first century. Combining essays about gender and labor in academia into one volume isnt just a clever way to bring two much-fretted-about topics under one roof. Its also a brilliant way to push readers to reckon with the ways sexism and exploitation reinforce and amplify one another in academia. And Bakers insistence on threading her own story throughout makes that reckoning all the more urgent and important. Ranging from concrete criticism (e.g., on the scourge of the all-male panel) and abstract reflection (e.g., on the power and possibility of hope),  Sexism Ed  is both meditation on and battle plan for the future of academia. Harriss Presumed Incompetent: The Intersections of Race and Class for Women in Academia Lower Ed: The Troubling Rise of For-Profit Colleges in the New Economy  by  Tressie McMillan Cottom Did you know that the president of the United States of America owned an exploitative for-profit university? Have you seen those heartstring-pulling University of Phoenix ads (featuring Maya Angelou?!) on television? Whats the deal with all of that? For-profit higher education is probably the fastest-growing and least-understood segments of higher education today, and Cottom is working hard to change that. With an iconic Twitter presence, spots on The Daily Show, and this already-classic book, Cottom has become the foremost expert in how for-profit colleges expand, why people attend them, and what they cost their students and the country. Trans* in College: Transgender Students Strategies for Navigating Campus Life and the Institutional Politics of Inclusion  by  Z. Nicolazzo In the ginned-up backlash to efforts at making college campuses more inclusive, transgender and nonbinary students (especially trans and enby students of color) often pay a heavy price. But trans students are also resilient, shaping their own lives and their campuses in positive and transformative ways. Resilience within oppressive institutions is the focus of  Trans* in College. Like most of the books on this list (for good reason!), this one is inextricably personal and political. Grounded in extensive research in the field and her own experience of being trans in higher ed, Nicolazzo makes a crucial contribution to the project of understanding how universities work to exclude and include. If this book inspires you to learn more, check out Nicolazzos Trans Studies in Higher Education syllabus for more reading suggestions. Extra Credit: Genny Beemyn’s Trans People in Higher Education (February 1, SUNY Press) Life of the Mind Interrupted: Essays on Mental Health and Disability in Higher Education  by  Kelly Rose Guest Pryal Pryals book is published in the same Raven Books series as  Sexism Ed, and it shows.  Life of the Mind Interrupted is personal, political, polemical, and pointed in its vision for transforming higher education to be more inclusive of disabled and mentally ill people. Pryal has a PhD and worked as a college teacher, so her insights derive from experience on both sides of the desk. She addresses a wide range of topics that touch on structural barriers (trigger warnings, disclosure and accommodations) and personal experiences (employment, suicide). If you want to understand how higher education is built, and not built, for people with disabilitiesâ€"especially mental healthâ€"related onesâ€"Pryals book is for you. Extra Credit:  Margaret Prices Mad at School: Rhetorics of Mental Disability and Academic Life Blackballed: The Black and White Politics of Race on American Campuses  by  Lawrence Ross With distressing regularity, an American college campus erupts after a racist party or incident of harassment takes place at a fraternity or sorority. Typically, theres a period of tumult followed by a complete lack of reckoning or real change. In this book, Ross argues that these isolated incidents are anything but isolated, and are instead a fundamental part of a higher education system designed for white students at the expense of black ones.  With a significant focus on the Greek system at predominantly white institutionsâ€"which continue to have an inordinate, disproportionate influence on the student experienceâ€"Ross draws on interviews and historical context to make his case. Ross, author of  The Divine Nine: The History of African American Fraternities and Sororities, zooms out from particular Greek organizations to consider broader policies (like affirmative action) that help continue American higher educations long tradition of racial segregation. Population Growth And Urban Road Emissions - 1738 Words

POPULATION GROWTH AND URBAN ROAD EMISSIONS Toh Xinyi Cindi1 1Undergraduate Student, Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, McGill University, 817 Sherbrooke St. W., xinyi.toh@mail.mcgill.ca Abstract This paper describes how world population growth is the most challenging factor in affecting urban road emissions. As world population grows, urban population has increased leading to greater demands for private motor vehicles due to issues like urban sprawl and the aspirations for owning a motor vehicle. Although there have been mitigation methods like increasing road infrastructure to ease congestion, the rate of urban population growth and demand for private motor vehicles far exceeds the measures, leading to what is known as†¦show more content†¦Yang et al (2014) points out that mobile sources of emissions, namely transport vehicles like diesel trucks, are â€Å"critical input(s)† for air pollutant emissions. The huge contribution to road emissions in urban areas by the transport sector is of concern because of the several consequences to human health that excessive air pollution can potentially cause. By understanding the factors behind increasing road emissions, countries can better be prepared to take action for climate change adaptation and mitigation (Timilsina Shrestha, 2009). This paper posits that among the many factors affecting road emissions, population increase is the most challenging factor in affecting urban road emissions. Population increase affects urban population growth and consequently the demand of vehicle ownership. In addition, population increase and the related measures in cities to cope with population growth gives rise to a continuous cycle of increased urban emissions. 2. Population Growth World population currently stands at over 7.2 billion in 2014 and is projected to increase to 9.7 billion by year 2050 (Population Reference Bureau (PRB), 2014). Among the entire world population, urban population makes up 54% of total global population in 2014 and continues increasing (World Health Organisation (WHO), 2014). The WHO (2014) also mentions in their Global Health Observatory that by

The various ways in which the poets present the theme of love and loss Essay Example For Students

The various ways in which the poets present the theme of love and loss Essay How on earth are you ever going to explain in terms of chemistry and physics so important a biological phenomenon as first love? Albert Einstein. The subject of love has always inspired poets, writers, and those lucky in love as well. Love is everything its cracked up to be. It really is worth fighting for, risking everything for. And the trouble is, if you dont risk everything, you risk even more. Some of the poets who are so inspired by love are John Clare, Christina Rossetti, Elizabeth Browning and Edith Nesbit who wrote classic love poems. John Clare was an English farmer turned poet of the natural world who wrote many poems, essays and letters on love, politics, sex, corruption, etc. Christina Rossetti was also an English poet who wrote many melancholic poems with symbolic religious themes. Elizabeth Browning was a famous poet of Victorian England best known for her romance with Robert Browning and her Sonnets From The Portuguese which is widely read. Edith Nesbit was an English novelist, poet and writer of stories for children though her novels and poems never gained much recognition as much as her stories for children. First Love by John Clare is a romantic poem about love at first sight. This poem is linked to love and loss, and has got all the sweet memories of falling in love for the first time and all the pain for losing it at the same time. How Do I Love Thee? by Elizabeth Browning is about a woman analyzing how she loves her husband immeasurably. This was her last poem probably written for her husband. A Birthday by Christina Rossetti is a blissful poem about nature filled with fecundity, and packed with nature imagery. Remember is also by Christina Rossetti, but is completely reverse of A Birthday. Remember is filled with a lot of pain, and the poet is obsessed with death and death hangs throughout the whole poem. Villegiature by Edith Nesbit is a poem about a conflict between expectation and reality. It shows us romantic notions of what lovers ought to be. How do I Love Thee? and Remember are both sonnets relating to love and how it is combined with death. Though in the way in which the poets approach the subject is quite different. Remember is a completely death obsessed poem and shows the passionate love Rossetti has for her lover. How Do I Love Thee? though is still much more less disturbing than Remember. The poem starts like a mathematical problem, let me count the ways, measuring the different ways, the breadth and the height of how she loves him. In Remember there is more of a poignant note, Remember me when Im gone away. The whole poem echoes with Remember me and shows the different ways how she is so obsessed with death like, Remember me when Im gone far away into the silent land. The poem begins with a very down to earth, rational and logical way in How do we love thee? but it loses all rationality by moving into spirituality. My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight, For the ends of Being and Ideal Grace. She means that people are capable of love in crucial moments of time, but moments of spirituality do not arise in everyday life. In Remember we see that the woman is going through death where she does not want to let go her lover and is quite averse to move on or end this relationship. We know this by When you can no more hold me by the hand, Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay. In Brownings poem we see all the euphoric moments of love where love can be found in simple and ordinary moments of life because love is contentment, I love thee to the level of every days Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight. Here we see the finest comparison of love made to sun where love is the light of the sun, but love can also be the heat, the harsh rays of the candlelight. You tell me of our future that you planned. Here the woman shows that her husband who is in total command dominates her and she does not object to it. In Brownings poem we learn that even though the poem ends with a death note its more heartwarming than Remember which is so death obsessed. The whole of Brownings poem echoes with I love thee. I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise I love thee with passion. This shows pure emotions and passion for her lover. We learn that she has intense and extreme love, which is unaltered by peoples praises and blames. Only remember me, she is pleading, because she feels it will be too late to counsel then or pray since death will be on her soon. The woman seems determined to be remembered since she wants to keep an image of herself in her lovers mind. We se that Rossetti compares the passion of love with passion of grief. She talks about old griefs, emotional problems that really made her sick. We learn that for adults faith can be skeptical, but for children, they either love or dont love. The love that she lost has now been transformed into his love, there are no reservations in her love. Smiles, tears, of all my life! and, if God choose, I shall love thee but better after death. She insinuates that if God permits, love will transcend life, beyond the barriers of love. In Remember we see that the octave is a repetitive call to be remembered, and as we come to the second part we notice a gradual change, that now she wants her husband to forget her because she places her husbands happiness instead of her demands. For if the darkness and corruption leave A vestige of the thoughts that once I had. 'The Sun Rising' by John Donne and 'To His Coy Mistress' by Andrew Marvell EssayThe poem A Birthday is like a rainbow shell with all the colours of a rainbow, almost like a woven tapestry. All the images here are auditory, impressive and appealing to the ear, even pictures of nature are covered here, whereas in Villegiature there are more immature responses to love. The poet knows that she loves him but tries to prove every time that she disapproves of him when she clearly shows how deeply and passionately she is in live with him. A Birthday with its oriental flavour and splendour is much better Villegiature. First Love by John Clare is a poem about love at first sight and how it is linked to love and loss. I neer was stuck before that hour With love so sudden and so sweet. The very first line conveys the violence of emotions, struck, with the suddenness and sweetness of the feeling. Her face it bloomed like a sweet flower, this is one of the most exquisite comparison made to woman that she is like a flower. My face turned pale as deadly pale, My legs refused to walk away. We are made aware of love as an overpowering emotion where the poet felt like a dead person who refused to walk away. He felt like he was on the top of the world when she looked at him. He fell to depth of despair. His life and all turned to clay. She had such an overpowering element in her that first he was not able to walk and now he could not see a single thing. His faculties are totally lost, but there is an exchange in it. He was tongue tied and couldnt speak a word to her and now he is able to communicate through his eyes. His eyes spoke as chords do from the string. In the last stanza the poet is being philosophical. He is very sure of the fact that his heart has left its dwelling place. It looks as though he was doomed to die and lose, because even though he spoke through his eyes, the girl said no. This is one experience, which he will never forget where love and loss are both involved. All the poems are conveying love and they have done it effectively by adding in nature imagery, or comparisons and sometimes even symbolic elements. How Do I Love Thee? is a sonnet of 14 lines. She starts her poems as a mathematical problem. I love thee freely, as men strive for Right; I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise. Here similes have been used to compare the way in which she loves him. In this poem not much of figurative speech is used. The tone is the same throughout. The title is quite good for the poem and you are able to relate to it as well quite easily as with the title itself you get to know what the poem is about. A Birthday is also a sonnet of 16 lines. Throughout the first part, the poem echoes with My heart is The first part of the poem is completely covered with similes and nature imagery. Her heart is compared to a singing bird, an apple tree and a rainbow shell. The second part of the poem is full of imperatives where it follows a delicate pattern of raise me, hang it, carve it, and work it. The title somehow is too vague for the poem unless we read the last line, but it would have been better if it were titled How Do I Love Thee? since she is giving a full analysis of how she loves him. Remember is a sonnet of 14 lines. Gone far away into the silent land. This is euphemism used here to show how the poet is referring to death. In this poem you do not find much of figurative speech but through out the poem thee is a gloomy atmosphere. Villegiature is a poem of four line stanzas. It comprises of an end rhyme and an internal rhyme. The whole poem is a mix of conflicting emotions and feelings. This poem has a lot of nature imagery used in it like pear tree bloom, dewy lawn First Love is a poem of three paragraphs of eight line stanzas. It consists of internal rhyme. This poem has a lot of nature imagery. Similes have been used like Her face it bloomed like a sweet flower, My face turned pale as deadly pale Personification is also used like They spoke as chords do from the string All the poems bring out the essence of love, but they might lack some elements. Like for How Do I Love Thee? the poem starts well enough but then it gradually moves from reality to. First Love though, is much more realistic since it shows how a person might feel when being in love. The feelings and reactions are beautifully explained and therefore gives a lasting impression on the reader. Remember conveys a message that, remember all the good times the people had and dont remember the depressing memories. Like in the part of the poem where it says, Better by far you should forget and smile, than that you should remember and be sad. Like forgetting the worse times and keeping a smile on your face rather than remember the worse times and being heartbroken about it.

Interesting Facts About Metal Alloys

Interesting Facts About Metal Alloys Chances are you often encounter metal alloys in your everyday life in the form of jewelry, cookware, tools, and most other items made of metal. Examples of alloys include white gold, sterling silver, brass, bronze, and steel. Here are some interesting facts about metal alloys. Facts About Common Alloys An alloy is a blend of two or more metals. The blend can form a solid solution or can be a simple mixture, depending on the size of the crystals that form and how homogeneous the alloy is. Here are some distinctive alloys: Although sterling silver is an alloy consisting mainly of silver, many alloys with the word silver in their names are only silver in color. German silver and Tibetan silver are examples of alloys that have the name but dont contain any elemental silver. Many people believe steel is an alloy of iron and nickel, but it consists primarily of iron, carbon, and any of several other metals.Stainless steel is an alloy of iron, low levels of carbon, and chromium. The chromium gives the steel resistance to stain, or iron rust. A thin layer of chromium oxide forms on the surface of stainless steel, protecting it from oxygen, which is what causes rust. However, stainless steel can be stained if you expose it to a corrosive environment, such as seawater. That environment attacks and removes the protective chromium oxide coating more quickly than it can repair itself, exposing the iron to attack.Solder is an alloy used to bond metals to each other. Most solder is an alloy of lead and tin. Special solders exist for other applications. For example, silver solder is used in the manufacture of sterling silver jewelry. Fine silver or pure silver is not an alloy and will melt and join to itself. Brass is an alloy consisting primarily of copper and zinc. Bronze, on the other hand, is an alloy of copper with another metal, usually tin. Originally, brass and bronze were considered to be distinct alloys, but in modern usage, brass means any copper alloy. You might hear brass cited as a type of bronze or vice versa.Pewter is a tin alloy consisting of 85 to 99 percent tin with copper, antimony, bismuth, lead, and/or silver. Although lead is used much less often in modern pewter, even lead-free pewter typically contains a small amount of lead. Lead-free is defined as containing no more than 0.05 percent (500 ppm) lead, which remains appreciable if the pewter is used for cookware, dishes, or childrens jewelry. Facts About Special Alloys These alloys have interesting properties: Electrum is a naturally occurring alloy of gold and silver with small amounts of copper and other metals. Considered by the ancient Greeks to be white gold, it was used as far back as 3000 B.C. for coins, drinking vessels, and ornaments.Gold can exist in nature as a pure metal, but most of the gold you encounter is an alloy. The amount of gold in the alloy is expressed in terms of karats, so 24-karat gold is pure gold, 14-karat gold is 14/24 parts gold, and 10-karat gold is 10/24 parts gold or less than half gold. Any of several metals can be used for the remaining portion of the alloy. An amalgam is an alloy made by combining mercury with another metal. Almost all metals form amalgams, with the exception of iron. Amalgam is used in dentistry and in gold and silver mining because these metals readily combine with mercury.

AIDS Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

AIDS - Essay Example This disease has been marked as the second most frequent pathological condition across the globe which has highlighted the fact that this condition is not restricted to a particular region but follows a global pattern. It has been labeled as the first most common cause of death in Africa where it has been reported to lead to more than 20 percent of the deaths in this particular region. Following the identification of the disease, it has been known to result in greater than 20 million deaths across the world. International health organizations have noted the severity of the issue and the World Health Organization put forward the fact that 39.4 million people had AIDS or they had a present infection with human immunodeficiency virus in the year 2004 (Davidson et al 2009). The region of Africa has the highest number of people with this disease and 70 percent of the total AIDS patients belong to this region. The United States of America also has a large number of people suffering from th e disease and in the year 2002, it was analyzed that 900,000 residents of the country had the disease. The disease serves as a grave problem in the country as it has been analyzed to be the second life taking reason amongst the males of the age group of 25 to 44 years in the country. Young children are also not spared and in the year 2002, it was found out that 800,000 more children were affected with this pathology which may result due to passing of the virus from the mother to the child during birth or via breast feeding from infected mothers (Robbins et al 2005). Thus it can be seen that a very large number of people are affected with this condition but many people avoid presenting their problems owing to the stigma associated with this condition. Thesis: AIDS is a global problem which affects a large number of people and these people should be helped and societies should be created to assist these individuals. The stigma associated with this condition is unjustified as the patie nts suffering from AIDS are like other patients who require help and assistance to overcome their condition. Support: Jonathon Mann who was the director of the Global AIDS Program of the World Health Organization for this syndrome in the year 1987 already created insight into the stigmatizing aspect of AIDS. He explained that overcoming the social response associated with AIDS was extremely important in tackling the issue of AIDS across the world. This problem associated with the condition of AIDS was again highlighted in the year 2000 by Peter Piot who was the executive director of UNAIDS. The stigma and the way the patients are treated negatively further increases the suffering of the people who have AIDS. These patients avoid coming forward owing to the fact that they might be labeled in a negative manner (Parker 2002). It has been analyzed that the morals of the people who suffer from AIDS are questioned. An incident of a gynecologist who was suffering from AIDS is a very good e xample of this stigma. The doctor was widely publicized in the media and was criticized for risking the health of the patients who might be affected with the disease. A major stigma associated

Irish Free State And The Irish Civil War

Irish Free State And The Irish Civil War The Irish Civil War lasted from the 28 June 1922 to the 24 May 1923. It was a conflict based between two opposing Irish nationalists. One of which was the Provisional government in which supported the idea of Ireland as a free state, the other side being the Republicans which opposed the Anglo-Irish Treaty and wanted Ireland to still be part of the United Kingdom. In the end the war was won by the Free State forces, following under the Provisional government. The results of the civil war left Ireland divided for many decades afterwards and claimed many casualties. One factor which is believed to have been the biggest impact on the uprising of the Irish civil war is the Anglo-Irish Treaty which established Ireland as a Free State. The idea of the treaty arose after the Irish War of Independence, between Irish separatists and the British government, ended after 2 years in 1921. A truce was declared and a treaty was being negotiated. The idea of independence from the UK was after a massacre occurred in Ireland as retaliation to the fall of the British Secret Service in Ireland. Attacks like this turned the Irish against the English and therefore independence was asked for. However instead of creating an independent republic, Ireland had to sign an oath which would only give it the opportunity of freedom to be a self-governing authority within the British Empire with the British monarch as head of state. However at the same time, the treaty that was offered to the Irish also gave opportunity to countries in Ireland to give back its control to the UK within the following month after the treaty was agreed upon. In the end the treaty provided a self-directed Irish state, only in 26 of the 32 countries part of Ireland. Even though, originally, the treaty was greatly appreciated throughout Ireland, it created a split in opinion of government. The countries in the northern region of Ireland didnt agree to the Partition of Ireland from the UK and so with this the Home Rule and the Government of Ireland Act of 1920 were passed. These gave Ireland two different parliaments, each with its own Prime Minister. One was given for the Unionists and the other for the Nationalists. The citizens of six northern countries under the leader of the unionist group voted as part of a referendum for the creation of a Northern Ireland in May 1921. The Northern Ireland was run under a Prime Minister which followed the Unionist belief. The British always expected that the northern region of Ireland would comply with the party of the treaty which gave power and authority back to the British. However the expectancy grew even more certain when Sir James Craig, the PM of Northern Ireland announced during October 1922 that we will have to make the choice either to vote out or remain within the Free State hence showing that he was not with southern Ireland. He later then said that as soon as Northern Ireland is given the opportunity to make a decision it is important that it is made instantly, so to show the world that any decision made came with no hesitation. Eventually, in a written agreement with Britain, Northern Ireland gave back any agreement which they acquired in the treaty and was under the ruling authority of the UK. Afterwards the UK was renamed to The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to reflect the new ruling. Thus the separation in state due to the treaty was yet the beginning of the civ il war between Northern and Southern Ireland. As a part of the treaty, Ireland was given the right to its own army. At first when the British government was ruling Ireland, the IRA was but a rebellious guerrilla force that was dedicated to the establishment of Irish as a republic. The IRA -Irish Republican Army was the army that fought against the British in the war of independence. However afterwards, the war split the army into two; those that continued their support for the treaty, who then became the first official Irish army, and those that were anti-treaty, those that wanted complete freedom. Due to outrage from some citizens about the fact that the treaty was signed, which to them seemed treacherous; rebellious protest and conflicts arose. In April 1922, the anti-treaty IRA seized control of the Dublin Four-Courts and other key buildings. Gaining some control over what occurred in Ireland. However the actions and rulings that the anti-treaty IRA had produced were seen as unacceptable. At times the government tried to mediate with the IRA to make an agreement on some level rather than having unnecessary tension. However after the IRA made no budge, it then led to the government becoming impatient with dealing with the situation as the power was unbalanced. This then led to the command that the now official Irish Army Pro-treaty IRA was to then bomb the Four-Courts. This succeeding in the sense that it got what the government wanted, which was the IRA out of Dublin. The bombing led to however the aggression and battle of the Irish Civil war. Not only were there disagreements in military, but also voting and opinions of the citizens became a major impact on the governments actions. In Northern Ireland people were starting to become more and more with the treaty, as evident in votes. Yet another example of how the disagreement of the treaty impacted the occurrence of the Irish Civil war. Eventually, the disagreements and battle became a topic of religion. The Irish army on numerous counts attacked Northern Ireland when crossing the military border. They mainly attacked Protestants in the area, thinking they were main people who were against the treaty. Eventually the Protestants in Northern Ireland turned towards the Catholics thinking they were the ones to blame, as to why the IRA had started attacking them in Northern Ireland and started to abolish them from their homes and started to take over their land. As a result the Protestants began to attack the Catholics in the area. This was done so with a great rise in violence and rioting. Even though the violence from the IRA began to decrease with the dawning of the war, the revenge on the Catholics became serious. Because of disagreements about the treaty of Ireland as a free state, and military response and revenge, the Protestants began to then use military attacks on the Catholics killing 257 of them between July 1920 and July 1922. About 11,000 Catholics were forced to leave their jobs in factories due to attacks from Protestant colleagues. The government of Northern Ireland attempted to restore order by trying to set up a police force which was dedicated to making harmony between the Protestants and the Catholics, however this only yet intensified the violence rather than maintaining any form of order. Eventually the police were given the power to imprison people who they thought to be at fault without the need for a trial, due to the special powers act of 1922 and the offences against the state act of 1924. The establishment of Ireland as a free state from Britain had a great impact on the cause of the civil war. Due to dispute and unsettled disagreements, anyone that had an opinion on whether or not the situation at hand should be carried out to allow Ireland to become free or to keep it under British rule, voiced it for whatever consequence. From the beginning of the treaty, there was always a dispute as to whether the independence was one on a national agreement, since from the very start it was believed to be certain that the entire nation wouldnt agree upon the partition. It led to the separation of Ireland into two states. Two states with different opinions and directions in mind for what would happen with Ireland, and what results should be acquired from agreements with Britain and the UK. This led to radicals and desperate matters where the military and rebellious groups did what they thought was necessary to make sure that even though it would lead to other reasons of argument, it will ensure that everyone had an equal voiced opinion. Ireland desired to became a free state, however even though part of it had its own rule, and others received what they wanted as to be under British rule, the misunderstanding and unfortunate events, such as guerrilla attacks and religious attacks, turned the wish to fulfil the establishment of a free state into a battle which didnt allow much freedom within the nation. It turned into a battle between government, military forces, and religion. So the Anglo-Irish Treaty and the Irish state vs. United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, was a great impact in influencing the cause of the Irish Civil war.

Misconceptions About Family Crests and Coats of Arms

Do you have a family coat of arms? If so, it may not be exactly what you think. Many people throughout history have used coats of arms ornamentally without giving much thought to the accuracy of their design or their own right to use them. There are, unfortunately, many companies in business today who will sell you your family coat of arms on a t-shirt, mug, or handsomely engraved plaque. While these companies are not necessarily out to scam you, their sales pitch is very misleading and, in some cases, outright incorrect. Coat of Arms Versus Family Crest A coat of arms is essentially a graphic display of your familys name, made unique in some way to the individual bearer.  A traditional coat of arms typically includes a patterned shield that is decorated with a crest, a helmet, a motto, a crown, a wreath, and a mantling. The oldest son would often inherit the coat of arms from his father without any changes, while younger brothers often added symbols to make theirs unique. When a woman married, the coat of arms of her family was often added to her husbands arms, called marshaling. As families grew, the shield of the coat of arms was sometimes divided into different parts (e.g. quartered) to represent the merging of families (although this is not the only reason a shield might be divided). Many people interchangeably use the terms crest and coat of arms to refer to the same thing, however, the crest is just one small part of the full coat of arms—an emblem or symbol worn upon a helmet or crown.   Finding a Familys Coat of Arms Except for a few individual exceptions from some parts of Eastern Europe, there is no such thing as a family coat of arms for a particular surname - despite the claims and implications of some companies to the contrary. Coats of arms are granted to individuals, not families or surnames. A form of property, coats of arms may rightfully be used only by the uninterrupted male-line descendants of the person to whom the coat of arms was originally granted. Such grants were (and still are) made by the proper heraldic authority for the country in question. The next time you come across a product or scroll with a family coat of arms for your surname, remember that your carrying of a particular name, such as Smith, doesnt grant you the right to any of the hundreds of coats of arms borne throughout history by others named Smith. Therefore, how could an individual or company that has not researched your direct family tree know whether you have inherited the right to display a particular coat of arms? If youre looking for something fun to wear on a t-shirt or display in your home, then these items are okay, though misrepresentative. But  if youre looking for something from your own family history, then buyer beware! Determining Whether an Ancestor Was Awarded a Coat of Arms If you would like to learn if a coat of arms was awarded to one of your ancestors, you will first need to research your family tree back to the ancestor you believe may have been granted a coats of arms, and then  contact  the College of Arms or appropriate authority for the country  your ancestor was from and request a search in their records (they often provide this service for a fee). While it is unlikely, although possible, that an original coat of arms was granted to an ancestor on your direct paternal line (handed down from father to son), you may also be able to find a family connection to a coat of arms.  In most countries you can design and even register your own individual coat of arms, so you could create one for yourself based on the arms of someone who shared your surname, from another ancestor in your family tree, or from scratch—to represent something special to your family and its history.

The Analytical Foundation Of Agenda Setting - 1757 Words

Introduction: Agenda setting is the most critical phase of the policy cycle and has a decisive impact on the entire subsequent policy and its outcomes. Agenda setting, Birkland suggests (1997, p.11), is â€Å"the result of a society acting through political and social institutions to define the meanings of problems and the range of acceptable solutions†. In other words, agenda-setting as a term was introduced by Cobb and Elder (1971) who â€Å"are concerned with how issues are created and why some controversies or incipient issues come to command the attention and concern of decision makers, while others fail† (p. 905). The analytical foundation of agenda-setting can be traced back to psychological theories of priming in work on intellectual transforming of semantic information. , Although policy making is very much a domestic concern involving national governments and their citizens, the international organizations (known as network actors) also are increasingly vital in shaping domestic or national policy choices and policy developments. Network actors help build norms by bringing new ideas/opinions and issues in the policy debates and serving as sources of information and testimony. They help build up issues, set agendas and provide information to create awareness of a problem. This is often done in such a way that it becomes more salient by underlining specific values, facts, and other socioeconomic considerations and how audience members interpret a particular situation.Show MoreRelatedThe Analytical Foundation Of Agenda Setting Essay1833 Words   |  8 PagesIntroduction: Agenda setting is the most critical phase of the policy cycle and has a decisive impact on the entire subsequent policy and its outcomes (Howlett, Ramesh Perl (2009). Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry free essay sample

The book contains suspense and tension between the colored and whites during the 1930’s. Even though the book is unique and strong in its own way, people debate about whether the book must be required reading. There are many viewpoints about the book; some negative and some positive. However, there are many reasons why the sixth grade should read Milred D. Taylor’s powerful novel. Milred D. Taylor’s novel is a novel that students will learn lessons and gain knowledge from. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry has three main reasons why it should be required reading for all sixth graders. Students will learn how to treat all people fairly, no matter how are like. Lillian Jean, a white girl, insults Cassie in Strawberry by saying, â€Å"You can’t watch where you going, get in the road. Maybe that way you won’t be bumping into decent white folks with your little nasty self. We will write a custom essay sample on Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page †(114) Lillian Jean is one of the white people who think that whites are better than colored, and judges her by her appearance which is why she looks down at Cassie and treats her unfairly. Students also need to know about how America is like in the 1930’s and how other people treat the colored. White men burn John Henry which affects his body, and makes him unable to speak. â€Å"But them men dragged him [John Henry] and Beacon both outa that house, and when old man Berry tried to stop it, they lit him afire with them boys. †(40) Students need to know the feelings that the colored people have and how hard they try to gain and earn their freedom. Cassie thinks it is unfair that she has to apologize to Lillian Jean when she did not harm her. ‘â€Å"But, Mama, it ain’t fair. I didn’t do nothin’ to that confounded Lillian Jean. How come Mr. Simms went and pushed me like he did? †Ã¢â‚¬â„¢(126) Mr. Morrison’s parents try hard to fight for their freedom, while the white men hurt their family during Mr. Morrison’s childhood. â€Å"But my [Mr. Morrison’s] mama and daddy they loved each other and they loved us children, and that Christmas they fought them demons out of hell like avenging angels of the Lord. †(149-150) There is an opposing viewpoint, however. Many believe that they are better just by their religion, culture, or looks. â€Å"Because [he is] [Mr. Simms] one of those people who has to believe that white people are better than black people to make himself feel big. † Some whites do not consider the colored people’s feelings, make them slaves, and treat the colored horribly just for their own benefit. â€Å"Well, Cassie, during slavery there was some farms that mated folks like animals to produce more slaves. Breeding slaves brought a lot of money for them slave owners, ‘specially after the government said they couldn’t bring no more slaves from Africa, and they produced all kinds of slaves to sell on the block. (149)They treat the colored like â€Å"[they] warn’t nothing to them. †(149)The whites demand respect from the colored, â€Å"but what [they] give them is not respect but fear. †(129) Although the opponents are against the debate and claim that the book should not be required reading, there is still a strong viewpoint(the â€Å"for† side) that thinks the book should be read. The opposing viewpoint has reasons that are unfair and partial to a race. The viewpoint that is for the debate has three strong reasons that can teach students the history of whites and colored. The book can give them many pieces of knowledge and teach them lessons that they might have not learned yet. It might influence their life and the way they think about other people. The opposing viewpoint might not learn or know the experience of suffering and facing hardships like the colored has. Those students might not understand how hard life is for the slaves during slavery days or how badly the owners treat their slaves. Overall, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is a book with pride, strength, and respect for humanity that should be read by all of the sixth graders.

Modifying the Delivery of an Angels of Hope Service New Prospects and New Opportunities

Changes are an essential element of development, which means that for an enterprise or an organization, a sudden change is rather a reason to accept the new knowledge and develop a new strategy rather than force the traditional style into the renewed organization.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Modifying the Delivery of an Angels of Hope Service: New Prospects and New Opportunities specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Taking such an establishment as a non-profit organization known as Angel of Hope, one can possibly predict that, given the current changes, the organization strategy needs to be developed and brought to a new level. Once realizing what [opportunities the organization can reach for, given all the peculiarities of a non-profit organization it is, one will be able to suggest the proper course for its further development and the dynamics of its growth. First of all, to determine the course of conduct for t he head of the organization and to suggest a certain solution, one needs to consider the peculiarities of the company, its current state of affairs and the type of services which its delivers. Therefore, it can be considered that the organization is completely independent from any sort of patronage. If the situation did not demand immediate actions and certain funds, Angels of Hope would continue providing their aid to those in need. The organization used to receive ax-deductible gifts and grants to be used for social amenities, which allows to suggest that, to deliver the goods to the people who need it, the organization uses the means of transportation which are considered the fastest. Consequently, the key thing which Angels of Hope pay large amount of money for is the time. However, the organization also occasionally borrows money, which can be used as the way to survive the sudden change and to adjust to the rapidly changing environment (Zhu, 2007, 123). Despite the fact that b orrowing will trigger the necessity to search for even more funds to return the borrowed money, the given policy can still be a way out for the time being while the organization is adjusting to the new environment.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? A peculiar solution offered by the Muwamba (n. d.), the delivery of the goods to the regions which are the closest to the given affiliate of the organization does seem efficient. Likewise, other affiliates of the Angels of Hope will provide the nearby regions with the required help. Thus, the maximum efficiency will be achieved with the minimum losses. According to Muwamba (n. d.), the given approach will allow a non-profit organization to â€Å"become more efficient in service delivery as the linkages have opened up more resources to them† (Muwamba, n. d.). Another interesting idea which Muwamba offered as a means to raise funds for a non-profit organization and which can actually work for the Angles of Hope as well is engaging into capital campaigns to gain more weight and possibly an award; as Muwamba assures, several companies already â€Å"have engaged in capital campaign drives in which they request funding from the private sector with a clear proposal on how the funds will be used to improve their service delivery† (Muwamba, n. d.). In addition, it can be possible to turn the delivery of the social services into an event which more people can learn about and which will be able to serve as a means to attract the people who can fund the organization. Waters, Burnett, Lamm and Lucas (2009) explain, the given tactics can be quite efficient when using the proper media: Social media provide a variety of ways for users to become involved with organizations [†¦] found that nonprofit organizations use social media to streamlin e their management functions, interact with volunteers and donors, and educate others about their programs and services. Through interactions with stakeholders on Facebook and other social media applications, organizations seek to develop relationships with important publics. (Waters, Burnett, Lamm Lucas, 2009, 103) It cannot be denied that the above-mentioned means of fundraising and efficient delivery of certain goods also have their flaws; among the most obvious ones, one must point out the fact that each of the strategies require great amount of time. However, given the existing state of affairs, the suggested approaches are the optimal decisions and the most winning scenario imaginable. Once the organization starts standing on its own feet and regains its financial status, the previous financial strategy can be suggested instead. Thus, it is obvious that at present, the organization needs to reconsider its way of spending the money and distributing the funds. Since the organiz ation does not aim at gaining money and does not strive on a commercial profit, it must be admitted that, in the given slot of time, when the organization has to survive considerable changes, the most appropriate decision will be to deliver the services with the minimum amount of money spent on the delivery.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Modifying the Delivery of an Angels of Hope Service: New Prospects and New Opportunities specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Thus, the quality and the amount of the services will be guaranteed high, which is obviously the aim of the company. Once people realize that the organization aims at assisting a certain layer of population, it can be suggested that the fundraising will become easier with the help of sponsors. Reginald Fessenden and the First Radio Broadcast

Reginald Fessenden and the First Radio Broadcast Reginald Fessenden was an electrician, chemist, and employee of Thomas Edison who is responsible for transmitting the first voice message over radio in 1900 and the first radio broadcast in 1906. Early Life and Work With Edison Fessenden was born October 6, 1866, in what is now Quebec, Canada. After he accepted a position serving as principal of a school in Bermuda, Fessenden developed an interest in science. He soon left teaching to pursue a science career in New York City, seeking employment with Thomas Edison. Fessenden initially had trouble attaining employment with Edison. In his first letter seeking employment, he admitted that he [Did] not know anything about electricity, but can learn pretty quick, leading Edison to initially reject him though he would eventually get hired as a tester for Edison Machine Works in 1886, and for Edison Laboratory in New Jersey in 1887 (the successor to Edisons famous Menlo Park lab). His work led him to encounter inventor Thomas Edison face to face. Although Fessenden had been trained as an electrician, Edison wanted to make him a chemist. Fessenden protested the suggestion to which Edison replied, I have had a lot of chemists . . . but none of them can get results. Fessenden turned out to be an excellent chemist, working with insulation for electrical wires. Fessenden was laid off from Edison Laboratory three years after he began working there,  after which he worked for Westinghouse Electric Company In Newark, N.J., and the Stanley Company in Massachusetts. Inventions and Radio Transmission Before he left Edison, though, Fessenden managed to patent several inventions of his own, including patents for telephony and telegraphy. Specifically, according to the National Capitol Commission of Canada, â€Å"he invented the modulation of radio waves, the ‘heterodyne principle,’ which allowed the reception and transmission on the same aerial without interference.â€Å" In the late 1800s, people communicated by radio through Morse code, with radio operators decoding the communication form into messages. Fessenden put an end to this laborious manner of radio communication in 1900, when he transmitted the first voice message in history. Six years afterward, Fessenden improved his technique when on Christmas Eve 1906, ships off the Atlantic coast used his equipment to broadcast the first trans-Atlantic voice and music transmission. By the 1920s, ships of all kinds relied upon Fessendens depth sounding technology.   Fessenden held more than 500 patents and won Scientific Americans Gold Medal in 1929 for the fathometer, an instrument that could measure the depth of water beneath a ships keel. And while Thomas Edison is known for inventing the first commercial light bulb, Fessenden improved upon that creation, asserts the National Capitol Commission of Canada.   He moved with his wife back to her native Bermuda after leaving the radio business due to differences with partners and lengthy lawsuits over his inventions. Fessenden died in Hamilton, Bermuda, in 1932.
